One Life Charity is pleased to announce its 6th annual charity bicycle ride that will take place on 3rd October 2009.

The route is an 80km loop that starts and finishes in the centre of Bankya. The ride will start at 09:00 and we are asking all participants to arrive by 08:30 in order to register.

The participation fee is 25 BGN per rider and we are hoping that the riders will raise additional sponsorship.

One Life Charity has recently coordinated the second CWUHA aid delivery to Bulgaria. This aid has benefited hospitals, schools and orphanages in Vidin, Sofia, Kula, Kustendil and Montana.

All monies raised will be used to help disadvantaged children in Bulgaria allowing One Life Charity to build on the work we have already done.

The teams had to play a round robin which meant they had 4 games to play in their respective group. The top two teams would then progress to the semi-finals. Tullabassy Wanderers made the most impressive start with a 7-0 victory over Legal Eagles, although one person referred to them as the Limping Lawyers!! CableTel, Flannagans, King Sturge, UniCredit and Adecco also opened their accounts with a win.

Some fine football saw UniCredit notch up 7 goals in their second match, followed by 6 in the third and 4 in their last group game, an impressive performance which saw them go through as group B winners. The other team who was impressing the spectators was Tullabassy Wanderers, not so much by the amount of goals scored but by their solid defence. They went through as winners of group A, playing all their games without conceding a single goal.

Sterling made a comeback and won the next two games but were pipped at the post for second place in Group A by King Sturge who played steady football and secured 2 wins and 2 draws, giving them a total of 8 points. Runners-up in Group B, one point ahead of Flannagans, were Adecco.

So, the tournament was now at the semi-final stage and the four teams still involved, and playing for the trophy were paired as follows: Tullabassy Wanderers v Adecco & Unicredit v KingSturge

SEMI FINALS

Tullabassy Wanderers – Adecco 4:0

UniCredit Bulbank – King Sturge 5:0

Of the four semi-final teams, Tullabassy Wanderers, UniCredit and Adecco had not lost a game and Adecco had fought hard for a victory in their final group game to secure their semi-final place. The scene was set for what were going to be two hard fought matches.

Whilst both games were tough, especially given the heat of the day, some exciting football was played by all four teams involved, Tullabassy ran out 4-0 victors over Adecco and UniCredit got the better of King Sturge with a scoreline of 5-0.

FINAL

So, the final would be contended between two unbeaten teams, one of which still had not conceded a single goal and the other had scored 27.

After a 15 minute rest and a well deserved water break (or something a little stronger for some players) it was time for the final.

Both teams lined up, shook hands and the game was on. Tullabassy took the lead after one of their players was sent tumbling. Unicredit fought back well and were awarded a penalty following a Tullabassy handball – 1-1. A little shocked at conceding their first goal, Tullabassy took the fight to the bankers but despite their best efforts they went further behind. Unicredit got stronger and soon a third goal hit the back of the net. Unfortunately, Tullabassy then found themselves down to 4 men after two of their players were red carded, which was a little harsh. Unicredit scored the final goal of the tournament, making the final score 4-1.

So, the “One Life Charity” football 6s champions for 2009 are Unicredit Bulbank. Well done to them. They received the trophy and the winners medals from Rossy Vasileva, together with a bottle of champagne courtesy of Stefan Dimitrov at Allied Pickfords.

There is no doubt that all teams gave 100% effort, played great football and provided some great entertainment. More than that they contributed greatly to the efforts to improve the conditions of those children who are suffering in hospital and orphanages, sometimes in dire conditions, and are less fortunate than ourselves.

It was particularly nice to have some of the kids from St Dimitar orphanage in Kula, together with the Director Mr Cvetimir Valchev. They will benefit from the proceeds of the day, which should be in the region of 5000 leva.

We are hoping to attract 16 teams and run the competition along the lines of the Champions League with four divisions of four teams.

The teams should consist of 6 players (5 on field plus goal keeper) plus max. 2 substitutes. The teams will play a round-robin and the top two from each group to the quarter-final stage. (3 points will be awarded for a win and 1 point or a draw). Rules of the tournament in English and Bulgarian language.

The participation fee for each team is 500 BGN. The teams are encouraged to wear their own (or companies’) t-shirts.

The One Life’s Annual Bike Ride raise awareness of the problems children with serious illness & disadvantage are facing in Bulgaria.

We have recently supported furnishing of two wards of the National Hospital for Infectious Diseases, provided them with new beds, bedding and ancillary equipment. We have more recently moved our efforts to the children’s oncology ward at Varna hospital. Apart from the hospitals, One Life Charity supports children in orphanages in Sofia, Panagyurishte, Pleven and Samokov and have supported a blind school, by providing them with new braile equipment.

Other teams were from Russian (The Moscow Dragons) and from Bulgaria (Valiaciate from Pernik, The National Sports Academy, Murphy’s Misfits) Will Greenwood gave coaching sessions to the Bulgarian rugby team, from the town of Pernik, which was featured on SKY Sports and Rugby World.

The day competition featured a round-robin event for the two divisions and the top teams played in the final of the day. The final was contested by The Purple Nasties and Valiacite (“Steam-Rollers”), with the Purple Nasties running out winners in a close fought game.

The evening was spent in the grandeur of the Military Club where we hosted a dinner and auction. The memorabilia on sale included items signed by Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Maradonna, George Best, Robbie Williams and Will Greenwood himself.

Naturally, we were extremely grateful to Will Greenwood for giving up his time and to Ben Richardson for organizing the UK side of things with James. It was a most tremendous day. To follow things through Will Greenwood wrote a wonderful article for The Daily Telegraph centred around his activities in Bulgaria.
